$110K Mystery Account Discovered by Township Manager

The $110,403 will be used to complete two projects—a dam repair in Upper Silver Lake Park and an Act 537 Plan upgrade.

Some municipal detective work by township Manager Kurt Ferguson has unearthed more than $110,000 for Newtown Township’s general fund. During a Board of Supervisors meeting Wednesday, Ferguson explained that he recently began looking into the purpose of a “benefit obligation fund” that caught his attention while he drafting the budget. His investigations revealed the account, initially created in 1994 to fund an early retirement benefit for two former municipal employees who are now deceased, had a pool of money that was no longer needed for its original purpose. In 1994, the township deposited $75,000 into an account for the benefit obligation fund and continued to pay into it through March of 2000, Ferguson explained. In early 2000, the …

Newtown Township's finances are healthy, Township Manager Kurt Ferguson reported to the Board of Supervisors on Wednesday. According to Ferguson, the township has a year-end fund balance of $950,000. The budget had estimated a $680,000 year-end fund balance. If everything comes in as budgeted, Ferguson expects the township to have a fund balance of more than a million dollars at the end of 2013. The trend of "healthy" earned income tax in February continued through the month, Ferguson said. As of Wednesday, the township has collected $1,083,700 in earned income tax. Former Employees Reflect on Sycamore Street Acme

About 15 former Syscamore Street Acme employees reflected on their memories of the store.

For Doris Randolph, Saturday’s demolition of the Sycamore Street Acme was a bittersweet moment. The Northampton resident grew up in Newtown Borough and worked at the grocery store for nearly seven years, starting in 1955 when she was 16. “I’m sad to see it go,” said Randolph, who was known during her time at the store as Doris Wilson. Randolph and about 15 people who formerly worked at the Sycamore Street Acme location attended a small get together and photo session in the minutes before the decaying building was annihilated by demolition crews. “It’s nice to see everyone here,” said Jim Brannigan, who worked as a produce manager at the store for 20 years. Brannigan said he fondly looks back on the people, the countless employee picnics …
