New Fresh Works Closes Abruptly

Owner Mike Mayberry said the property manager pulled out of a negotiated lease without an explanation.

The Fresh Works, which opened this month in Newtown, has closed abruptly.

Owner Michael Mayberry told Patch the situation was beyond his control.

The property manager, Brixmor Property, pulled out of the negotiated lease "without an explanation." Patch has reached out to Brixmor and is awaiting a response.

The sandwich shop, which has a location in Richboro, opened the store the Village at Newtown Shopping Center earlier this month. It was located in the space formerly occupied by Lee's Hoagie House.

Mayberry said the shop was operating under the terms of the Lee's Hoagie House lease, which expires May 31, and was informed by Brixmor that was not permitted.

"None of this makes sense to anyone," Mayberry said, adding Brixmor did not provide him with an explanation. "I protested the decision, but was informed that if I did not exit the premises immediately, they would file a court injuction against me personally," he said.

Mayberry said he is very disappointed about the situation.

"We were very excited to finally join the Newtown community and I find myself almost at a loss for words in expressing how disappointed I am that this has happened," Mayberry said.

"We will not let this deter us in our journey to serve the Newtown area with the Freshest steaks and hoagies that Richboro has loved for 10 years now," Mayberry said. "We will be back, sooner than some might think."
