Police Warn of IRS Impostor Scam

Police say residents should hang up if they receive a call from someone saying they are from the IRS.

Newtown Township police are warning residents of a scam attempted on several local residents.

Residents have been receiving calls from people who say they are IRS agents and seek personal information. Police say residents should hang up if they receive a similar call, because the IRS does not call taxpayers regarding their accounts.

Two incidents were reported to police this week. According to Newtown Township police, a resident said a man called him Monday and pretended to be an IRS agent. The caller told the resident that he owed back taxes and would be arrested.

Another resident received a similar call Tuesday.

This type of fraudulent activity is steadily increasing “with the callers becoming more verbally aggressive in attempts to intimidate the victim,” according to information from the local police department.
